GN Das Memorial Centre

Introduction

G N Das Memorial Centre intends to remember Justice Gopendra Nath Das, who was an eminent judge of the Calcutta High Court.  In his later years, Justice Das became intimately connected with the Ramakrishna Mission and was instrumental in the founding of the Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama.

His Life & Achievements

Gopendra Nath Das was at one time one of the leading legal practitioners at the Calcutta High Court and later became a judge. After his retirement,  he was elected a member of the Law Commission.  He became the Administrator (President)  of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and was also the Founder President of the Sri Ramakrishna Day Students Home at Baghbazar.

Justice Das was closely associated with Swami Lokeswarananda Maharaj and as Swami ji has written in an article “Pathuriaghata to Narendrapur”,  Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission began in a very small way at Pathuriaghata as a students’ hostel in a donated building in 1943.  Around 1946, as the student strength started increasing, Ramakrishna Mission decided to shift to a bigger premises and set up a full fledged school.  Certain legal complications arose and at that time Justice Das, who was the President of the Managing Committee, took an active role.  The matter was moved to the High Court and the issue was resolved.  The land was selected at Narendrapur and in 1957, the Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission started its journey.  In 1959, the students were shifted from Pathuriaghata to the new school and the rest is history.

His Guru

Gopendra Nath Das took Mantra Diksha from Swami Virajananda who was a direct disciple of Swami Vivekananda.  Swami Virajananda was the sixth President of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission (December 1938 to May 1951).

His Wife Manimala

Gopendra Nath Das married  Manimala, daughter of Rasamay Mitra, who was a reputed educationist.  The family hailed from Chanak village, near Guskara, in Burdwan district.  Rasamay Mitra is remembered as an illustrious headmaster of Hindu School and it was during his time (1900-1910) that Hindu School emerged as one of the best educational institutions in Calcutta.

A reference to Rasamay Mitra may be found in the Kolkata Karcha on 26th Sept 2016 in the following exhibit on Hindu School, Kolkata on its 200th-year Celebration.
